A return to earth seems inevitable after COVID-19: a huge tendency and rethinking of the environment and how we treated earth arose, and I am surrounded with new project initiatives of sustainable business, plastic reductions, biodegradable household items.
I use this company to purchase my household items that they deliver eco friendly, sustainable and plant based products and their 2-3 day regular delivery turned to a 5-7 day delivery since not only shipping precautions take longer, but also the demand they are facing was not expected and accommodating a so much bigger crowd takes time and the growth needs to be handled carefully.
Purchasing vintage furniture goes hand in hand with this: the amount of boxes, plastics, wraps that involves furnishing a space with new furniture it’s astronomical and this ends up completely eliminated when purchasing second hand. Fewer deliveries, less boxes, more life to an item.
It used to be something that only some could afford: a classic eames chair, a classic lamp, a dining set Luis IX, things that because of its value where unique: yet now, it surpasses the uniqueness of it, and the fact that you are saving money because of it being pre-owned, it makes a sustainable statement, which our society widely agrees with.
Below, I list some reasons why purchasing vintage furniture can be of a great advantage, not only for your home, but also for your business:
QUALITY
In most cases, the making of furniture or even appliances is much better quality when they are old: trust me, your mom probably has that blender that you hated, yet it works like none, when your $ 20 blender from Walmart will last no more than a year (speaking from experience).
In the past, the making of furniture was less massive, more dedicated, the materials used were less plastic, more genuine and better quality. That goes for clothing, food, and many of the things that we consume nowadays.
UNIQUENESS
Since most probably this vintage items were not massively reproduced, most likely, they are not everywhere, not everyone has them: this means that you are acquiring a unique product, a conversation piece, an item that will give personality to your space.
It’s not the same having an Ikea cabinet, which can easily blend with your space, than having an vintage cabinet, with some carvings, special finish, ornate hardware, and a story to it.
SUSTAINABILITY
As mentioned at the beginning, the shipping and delivery of new furniture has a huge toll on the environment. But also the whole process of producing a new piece: from getting the materials from nature, transportation of these, everything that involves making the piece in a factory.
And not to mention when you are getting these for a hotel, restaurant, etc. where you need multiple of each -- they usually don’t come packed in bulk. A great idea here that I personally used then doing the procurement for a restaurant, we researched restaurants or hotels that recently closed and they need to sell they furniture and you can get it, use it as is, or upcycle.
MARKETING
Being sustainable is HOT - and there’s a research that (mostly) millennials, will rather consume a brand that matches their values and this is a value that is getting on top of the value pyramid. This will apply the most if you are a brand, where you have customers, users that will consume from you.
Or you can just match your values with your purchases. Wich is awesome as well.
HOW CAN I DO IT
Well, you can go and do it yourself, research on the internet where the best thriftstores are, vintage furniture stores, fly markets, etc. I’ve seen some tik toks, youtube channels, and instagram pages that will give you advise on this, where to buy, comparisons, etc. so it’s something you can do by yourself, without paying anyone.
On the other hand, if you are purchasing for a restaurant, hotel, or any business and you can’t go out there, you look for some second hand purchasers (trust me, there are everywhere, everyone loves a good furniture and gem finding) and give them your price point, budgets, specs, needs and wants, and have them do the looking. You can both figure out how you want to do this.
I hope this was useful for you, your home and your business, and we all start being a little bit more world-conscious in small steps.
